November 2013. Hannah Caswell, a 14-year-old teenager who had gone to visit her grandmother, misses the train back to Scarborough. Fearing that her father will be angry, Hannah agrees to be taken by Kent, a 19-year-old neighbor with a reputation as a womanizer. When Kent drops her off at the station, she tries to track down her father to come find her, but is unsuccessful. Hannah then decides to hit the road and someone calls her from a car. It will disappear without a trace. October 2017. Kate Linville, a London-based Scotland Yard detective, returns to Scarborough to sell her late father's house. But the last tenants have destroyed the house and Kate, very affected, must hire someone to fix the damage. In the meantime, she will stay with a married couple who rents rooms. Their names are Goldsby and their 14-year-old daughter Amelia has disappeared.
