The author himself included this story in his list of "12 Favorite Sherlock Holmes Stories."
The action of the story takes place a few years after "The Last Case of Holmes", where the main character supposedly dies during a fight with the head of the London criminal world, Professor Moriarty, near the Reichenbach Falls.
Thanks to many years of close friendship with Holmes, Watson became interested in all kinds of criminal cases. The case of the tragic death of Ronald Adair particularly moved Watson. Ronald Ader belonged to the cream of society, had considerable wealth. He liked to play card games. One evening after the game, Ronald returned home to his room, locked the door from the inside. From that moment on, no sound came from Ronald's room. When the door was broken down, Ronald Adair was found dead. It was later established that he was killed by a revolver bullet, which seems impossible, because no one entered the locked room.
An unexpectedly "resurrected" Holmes appears to help solve the mystery.
